Historical NotesPart of a collection including a wood tool chest containing selected ship building tools, c. 1830-1930. These objects were used by several generations of the Duke family who worked in the ship building trade in Elizabeth, Pa. From the early 19th century into the mid-20th century. Many of the tools are unique to ship building and document an important industry for the region.Label TextThe Duke family used these tools in their Elizabeth, Pa., boat building business. More than 250 of the 300 steamboats working the western rivers by 1836 were built in Pittsburgh, Brownsville, or Elizabeth.
