Historical NotesAARP button. The Civic Center chapter of the AARP was established in 1975 in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Its meetings were held at the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. They promoted Members of the organizations participated in volunteer activities in the community attended AARP conferences and held luncheons with speakers on various topics. In 1984 they raised over $1,500 to help pay for renovations to the Lillian Russell room in the William Pitt Union at University of Pittsburgh. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) was founded by Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus in 1958. The organization was formed from the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA), which Andrus had created in 1947 in an effort to assist retired teachers to procure health insurance. Among the stated goals of AARP is to improve the quality of life for older people.
