Historical NotesPittsburgh Hornets shorts worn by Willie Marshall in the 1952-53 season. Willie Marshall played four seasons with the Pittsburgh Hornets in the 1950s. A prolific scorer, he spent 20 seasons with various American Hockey League hockey teams and four seasons with the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs. Marshall led Pittsburgh to the Calder Cup championship in the 1954-1955 season, one of four Calder Cup teams he would play for. When he left the AHL in 1972, he was the league's all-time scorer and the AHL now presents the annual Willie Marshall Award to the player who scores the most goals each season. The Hornets, a minor-professional team that played at the Duquesne Gardens, began in 1935 as the Pittsburgh Shamrocks, members of the International Hockey League (soon after the American Hockey League). In 1956, the Hornets moved to Rochester, NY, but the franchise would return to Pittsburgh from 1961-1967.
