Historical NotesThis 105mm shell casing was used with the M2A1 (M101A1) Howitzer. The Hays Army Ammunition Plant was originally built by the Navy in 1942 and operated by Mesta Machine for wartime production. Initially it produced metal parts for 16-inch shells and 5-inch breechblocks. In the 1950s, during the Korean War, the plant was operated by Mullins Manufacturing Company. In 1966, the plant switched to Army control and was run by Levinson Steel Company. Hays produced 105-mm shells at a rate of 250,000 per month during 1968. It was the only Army plant with cold extrusion capability. In 1971, the plant was put on standby status by the military, and in 1993 they sold the site to the URA for one dollar.
