Historical NotesPart of a collection of paintings by John Michael O'Cilka, a mining engineer and self-taught artist. The paintings, probably painted in the 1950s and 1960s, depict regional genre scenes of flax scutching, mushroom and huckleberry picking, and immigrant farmers in noon prayer, as well as one of President John F. Kennedy seated in a rocking chair. These paintings augment a collection of other works by John O'Cilka that capture regional coal mining scenes. Donor John A. O'Cilka is the artist's son.
