Historical NotesA mezuzah from Tree of Life Congregation in Uniontown, PA. The Tree of Life Synagogue in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, was founded by Harris Cohen, David Friedberg, Louis E. Rubin, David Goodstein, Issac Silverman, Jacob Davis, Harry Heyer, J. Ogusky, and Simon Cohen in 1902. The synagogue was first located on the corner of Beeson Avenue and Dunbar Street. In 1909, the congregation purchased a new lot at Iowa and East Fayette streets. In 1922, the congregation would move again to Pennsylvania Avenue, its current location. The first spiritual leader of the congregation was Reverend Samuel Cohen, who was followed by Rabbi Samuel Leibowitz. The first president of the congregation was Harris Cohen, who was followed by Solomon Cohen, David Goldberg, Morris Friedman, and Abe Cohen. In 1919, the Ladies Auxiliary was formed by women of the congregation. Their duties were to handle social affairs, as well as aid in congregation activities. The first president of the Auxiliary was Mrs. Ben Davis. The Auxiliary was active in fund raising from card parties, food sales, and dinners. The earliest minutes date to 1926, shortly after the move to newly built synagogue on Pennsylvania Avenue. In 1964 the Tree of Life Auxiliary became the Tree of Life Sisterhood. Fund raising and congregation activities continued through the life of the congregation. The Sisterhood also played a large role in the religious school. Abe Weiss was Chairman of the School Board beginning in 1940 and Shule president from 1954 to 1955 and 1958 to 1959.
