DescriptionLarge gray rock with yellow and orange (carnotite) throughout.Dimensions5.25 x 3.5 x 8.5 in. (13.3 x 8.9 x 21.6 cm)Historical NotesCarnotite is a bright to greenish yellow mineral that occurs typically as crusts and flakes in sandstones. Amounts as low as one percent will color the sandstone a bright yellow. The high uranium content makes carnotite an important uranium ore and also radioactive. Standard Chemical Company (SCC) processed Carnotite to extract radium. SCC was founded by two Pittsburgh entrepreneurs, James and Joseph Flannery, in 1911. Their production plants in Canonsburg and Pittsburgh were visited by Marie Curie in her 1921 visit. This specimen was mined in Paradox Valley, Colorado.
