Historical NotesMary (Maria) Tristani Grilli made and wore this red velvet dress for her Confirmation in 1949. Born and raised in Roccacinquemiglia, Italy, she lived through the German occupation of her town in the early 1940s. She and her parents fled the town during the worst of the occupation, seeking shelter in a convent, while her grandparents remained in the family's home in Roccacinquemiglia. After the war, they returned to the family farm and resumed daily life. The Catholic faith was very important to the Tristani family; they attended mass every Sunday and celebrated the feast of the town's patron saint, San Rocco. Roccacinquemiglia's Mother Church was badly damaged during WWII, forcing the townspeople to worship in a smaller church. It was at the small church where Grilli received her Confirmation in the presence of her parents and grandparents.
