BiographyCandy Young Sanders (1962) is a former USA Olympic athlete and the first woman to hold the position of Delaware State University’s Director of Athletics. She attended Beaver Falls High School and set world junior and high school records in the hurdles. Sanders broke the junior Olympic record twice in her freshman year in addition to breaking the 60-meter hurdle record at Madison Square Garden in 7.5 seconds. She became recognized by Sports Illustrated as the nation’s Most Outstanding High School Athlete in 1979. She was a member of the 1979 United States Pan American Team and qualified for the 1980 United States Olympic Team. She attended Farleigh Dickinson University and won NCAA indoor titles and was an eight-time All-American.Sanders has been honored multiple times and has secured a spot on many Hall of Fame lists. She is also an alumnus of Delaware State University where she obtained her masters in sports management in 2009.
