BiographyMichael Flournoy was a Vietnam veteran who served in the army from 1962-1968. Flournoy was born in Birmingham, Alabama but moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in his teens. He lived in the Hill District at the time and attended Schenley High School but returned to Parker High School in Birmingham in his last year to graduate. After graduating, Flournoy spent his time playing tennis and golf and tennis and later enrolled in Alabama A&M University to study graphic arts. At A&M University, he participated in numerous extra-curricular activities such as football, track, choir and drama. During his senior year in college, he joined CORE and became active in the civil rights movement through CORE. Before he could graduate from college, he moved around the country with CORE. At 26, he learnt that he had been drafted into the war. By the time he completed his service, he had become an E6 staff sergeant. Flournoy belonged to the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions as well as the First Combat Aviation Brigade. After he finished his service he started work with the military draft board as a volunteer in the late sixties. He also worked as an athletic director at Kay Boys Club in the Hill District around the same period he volunteered for the military board. He also worked as a manpower administrator for Community Action Pittsburgh in 1971 while attending graduate school. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, he started working for the St. John’s Hospital, the headquarters for the Northern Community Mental Health/Mental Retardation Program from 1975 to 1981. He left the St. John’s Hospital after he was employed by the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System in Pittsburgh in 1981. He is currently a retired readjustment therapist for the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System in Pittsburgh.
