Freedom House Ambulance Service

1967 - 1975
BiographyThe Freedom House Ambulance Service was established in 1967 in the Hill District. It began when Phil Hallen, at the time the president of the Maurice Falk Medical Fund and James McCoy Jr, founder of the Freedom House Enterprises teamed up to secure funds to provide training to black residents so they could in turn provide emergency medical care in their neighborhood. Dr. Peter Safar was a physician at the time who along with Nancy Caroline, another physician, trained 50 men and women to render these emergency services. In September 2014, veterans of the Freedom House Ambulance Service were honored during the 50th anniversary of the Hill House Association.
