351st Field Artillery Regiment

The 351st Field Artillery Regiment was first formed by Col. W.E. Cole during World War I after some of the black soldiers being discriminated against secretly wrote to black Pittsburgh leaders to inform them of their unfair treatment. The protests of the soldiers were successful and on November 15, 1917, 15 men were transferred to Camp Meade, MD. to engage in artillery training. More men from Pittsburgh later enlisted and the 351st Field Artillery Regiment was formed. However, this was not the end of the discrimination against the regiment as they continued to experience more of that discrimination at the hands of the white soldiers. The members of the regiment prevailed due to their bravery and courage and came back from the war with a celebration to welcome them by both black and white people.
