Mary Caldwell Mellon

BiographyMary was married to Thomas Alexander Mellon II, second son of Thomas Alexander Mellon, the founder of Mellon Bank. Originally a resident of Pittsburgh, she moved to Leavenworth, Kansas to live with her brother Alexander after being orphaned at age 17. He ran the Kansas Manufacturing Company, an important manufacturer of wagons that ran freight lines before the railroad came west. Thomas Mellon met Mary while in Kansas on family business. They were married until 1899, when he died of cancer of the throat and mouth.
