Adolf Edlis1860 - 1934

Adolf Edlis was born in Lichik in Austria-Hungary in 1860 and immigrated to the United States in the 1870s. He founded the Edlis Barber Supplies Business (now Edlis, Inc.) in 1988, to manufacture and distribute salon products as well as cough liniment and furniture polish. He served as city treasurer from 1909-1914 and as a member of the Pittsburgh Common Council. During his tenure, he was responsible for the Edlis Act which outlawed prostitution. Adolf Edlis was an active member of Jewish organizations including B’nai Brith, Poale Zedeck Synagogue, Adath Jeshurun Synagogue, the Zionist Organization of America, and Montefiore Hospital.
