Historical NotesThis painting depicts the Monessen Mill and Consolidation Coal Company boat the Arkwright, on the Monongahela River. George spent 6 weeks on the Arkwright traveling from Pittsburgh to New Orleans and painting the men at work and river scenes. Morris had been painting boats since his childhood in Westport, Connecticut where his father was a sailor. He came to Pittsburgh to attend Carnegie Mellon University. After school he worked as the lighting director for Mister Rogers and the Miss USA Pageant and also was an instructor of design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He passed in 2018.
