Used to bore holes through seams of coal to insert explosives.Label TextThis group of mining tools was used for setting black powder explosives by Peppy and Anthony Shaffer, brothers who worked in several mines in Washington County including the Gilmore Mine. The tools were probably made by a company blacksmith, out of iron and copper, used for the needle and tamper because it is non-sparking and would not accidentally ignite the explosive. Auger and short auger bit were used to bore holes in the coal to insert explosives.
