Historical NotesThe airborne magnetometer was developed at the Gulf Labs for geophysical prospecting of the earth. By detecting a concentration of magnetism it locates mineral deposits below the earth's surface. It was housed in this bomb-like shell called "The Bird". Gulf was the first oil company to establish and maintain its own flying magnetometer field crew and airplane, much of the airplane equimpment was developed at the Harmarville Laboratory. Magnetometer's were also used during World War II for submarine detection.
